BookHomestead.com, my Book Review Store

bookhomestead.com caption

One of my dreams is to have my own bookstore but as you can imagine the cost to have a storefront is staggering, something I’m not looking forward to have to pay for. I love to be around writers and book lovers in general. Off and online interaction is very important to me.

I’ve been helping authors for a while and it has been a very good experience. I enjoy looking for ways to get the word out about their works and mine. We are not competing but building up strength as we work together towards the same goal; to reach our audience.

I created my own bookstore online, BookHomestead.com, and as I promote it and find more authors and readers to visit on a daily basis I feel alive. My goal is that this site becomes the bridge between readers and writers. Most of our services are free so I’m needing not only the authors but my friends to help me promote the site.

Yesterday I received a box full of bookmarks for the site. I’m willing to mail some to anyone who would like to help me promote the site in their own town. You can give the bookmarks away, place them at the library, bookstores, small shops, anywhere where people stop by a counter top and can take one. If you are interested please e-mail me your mailing address and I’ll be glad to send you some.

You can send your address to services@bookhomestead.com

If you haven’t already, please visit the site. We have a new Featured Author. Don’t miss it!

Everyone wants me to compile them into a book. I know nothing about this and what to do, so if I ever get one compiled, I’m thinking along the line of calling it “Beautiful Woman”. It would be very much a pleasure to hand it over to you for your new site Again I know nothing About compiling one to send to you!

Good luck with this…I know you will do well.

Love Ya!

Feeling Satisfaction

23 11 2007

This morning I went about my daily routine of checking e-mails, blogs and websites. There was a book revision I finished late last night and it was time to get it out of the way. I’m pleasantly satisfied with the book and how it turned out. It’s the first one I publish for someone else. Then later on I checked my e-mail again and it was the author sending me some pictures with his book on hand, his radiant smile moved my heart. This is something that he couldn’t imagine in his wildest dreams, but that I had to make it happen because of his talent and most of all for his family.

Opening your mind and letting the words from your soul spill unto the pages of your work has a tremendous value. To me is the ultimate journey in connecting to everyone around us. The writing could be anything you want; non-fiction, fiction, poetry, play, movie script, lyrics, etc. it all has its way to reach those intended to receive it. The main thing is not to take with you that which is longing to emerge. It is in that creative flow that we get to know ourselves as we write, it’s almost a magical experience when the words somehow move someone’s spirit deep within. I can’t explain it but if I don’t see the words appear on my notebook or the blank screen of my computer I feel like a volcano close to erupt.

I think I feel the same -if not more- satisfaction to read other people’s work and not to mention to be able to help someone else birth that long awaited book. A book that was part of someone’s soul for so long and that yearned to be born into this reality realm in order to touch and transform those who read it. To awake thoughts, ideas, emotions in its readers. To leave a legacy behind.

Right now I’m working in the last details of this book launch, so stay tuned for when the big reveal takes place.

A Little Something to Help Others

30 10 2007

vete golpecito
My first Spanish children’s book.

This beautiful book comes in English also, I did the Spanish version and the best part is that 50% of the profits will go to the Hispanic Outreach program here in Bradenton, FL.

I don’t know if you believe in fate, but I’m starting to think that God works in mysterious ways. I never thought I would write a book for children but I encountered a message on a forum from someone who needed to have her book translated. I don’t go to that forum as often as I should but last week I did as I did my online visits trying to get in touch with other authors on the net; I call it online networking. I’m so glad I did because I know of Maggie Pagratis‘ good heart in everything she does. Her whole publishing is dedicated to give to different charities around the country. I’m the same way since my book Simplicity also donates 20% of the profits to a mission in Kenya. So I guess together we’ll continue a small legacy of giving to those in need.

I hope you are having a great week and that the next one is even better.

Being Grateful – excerpt from Simplicity, Richness of Life

27 10 2007

Having all the comforts that life has to offer can make us ungrateful, self-centered people who take everything for granted. I know I have fallen into this trap. Maybe you haven’t thought of all the things you take for granted, like a new day. Even your next breath is given to you because God wills it for you along with your health, your home, your car, your family, your children, food, clothing, work and much more. Taking things for granted makes us lose the appreciation we should have for the people, material possessions and abundant blessings in our lives. We miss what is of real value in our lives and , therefore, fall into unhappiness and despair. We are creatures composed of body and soul and , likewise, there are aspects of our nature that we need to attend to and develop on a regular basis. If we ignore part of our nature, it’s almost impossible for us to be able to live and grow as healthy spiritual individuals.

Being grateful is like opening the door to one aspect of our nature and allowing it to be nurtured and strengthened. Letting God be part of your daily life and thanking him for everything is a good practice. God created us in His image with a unique mission. Each mission is exclusive and needs to be brought to fruition so that we can achieve our higher purpose and give the glory back to God. Not being able to discover what that mission is in your life, might bring insecurity, unhappiness, emptiness, feelings of lack of fulfillment, and sometimes even tragedy into your life, but most of all, the important work needed for the world won’t see the light of day. That’s why it is so important for you to start by being grateful for God’s blessings and talents given to you. Develop them and, along with daily communion with him and prayer, you will be able to find out what your mission and purpose is in your life.

What I Want to Do

18 10 2007

Get more ambitious about where you want to explore and what you want to do.

This is what my horoscope said today, not that I care or believe in horoscopes but it seemed to relate to what I’ve been thinking lately. Finding my place in the writing world is one of exploration and what lies in my heart to write about. There are three distinctive areas I have passion for: inspiration, travel and marketing. Inspiration and travel is something I can easily blend, marketing is another subject matter all together but closely related to everything to I do as a writer.

Should a writer limit himself to just one genre? It seems to me that every writer I’ve read about took some time to discover what their voice was. Some of them like Nora Roberts had enough passion to develop two different kinds of writing even if she had to use a psedonym to see how it would work.

So here I am revising and editing my first marketing book, BookPromo Guerrilla Style and looking forward to share with writers effective ways to promote their own books. Publishing a book is just one step, what’s crucial is knowing how to get them on the reader’s hands even before you write the book.

My other two loves in writing, travel and inspiration, will merge soon and I will be letting you know when that becomes a reality.

Selling Books by the Thousands

22 09 2007

reading

What comes first, writing or selling your book? To tell you the truth the question is not which to do first but to write a book that people want to read. The key ingredient to write a book and sell thousands of it is to attach the book to a worthy cause.

There are thousands of companies and non-profit organizations all around the country in dying need to raise funds for their advancement. I’m sure you can find a few which you can identify with. You must be passionate about what you write because it will take a lot of work and effort in your part not only as you write the book but on the long road of promoting it. When your initial enthusiasm fades away it is your commitment to impact others with your book what will help you finish your project. A book promotion takes a minimum of two years and ideally you’ll be promoting it even longer.

Writers mistakenly think that they way to sell a lot of books is in bookstores when in reality it is outside, where you go directly to your audience. You must know who your audience is and where to reach it; the way to find out who your audience is by creating a marketing plan for your book. When you have a marketing plan you have a clear road map to deliver the book to the people.

A good way to promote your book and sell thousands is by attaching the book to a company. Companies need books and educational materials on an on-going basis, not only that but they also have built-in budgets for those expenses. All you need to do is find out what they need or are looking for, do a research on the topic and develop a book for them. This is where networking helps. While talking to business and non-profit organization’s owners you can find a need and fill it. When you come up with a book or book idea you can approach the company in order to offer them the book for their organization, ideally the book will be a good product to them to do fundraisings for their cause. They can give the book away to their supporters as an incentive or to create awareness to gain even more support. You can even offer them to sponsor the book and customize the book for their company by including documents, reports or a letter from the chairman, by doing so they will pay you to write and publish the book. When a company sponsors a book a special seal is designed and displayed prominently on the book cover. The better the sales potential of the book the bigger the amount the company will be willing to pay to sponsor it. They are basically paying for exposure, that’s why the marketing plan of your book is so important. It’s what you’ll present to the company in order to negotiate the terms for a sale order or potential sponsorship. Once the company accepts your book and agree upon a percentage of sale profits to go to their company, they will also agree to order and X amount of books when it’s published. Not only that but they will help you promote your book. The reason why they will do so is because your book will help their fundraising and raise awareness about their company’s mission.

In a nutshell here is what you do:
• Make a commitment to find a worthy cause
• Be passionate about it
• Find the right company
• Be persistent and know the market
• Prepare a proposal explaining why your book is perfect for their cause
• Make a deal
