Election 2008

30 10 2008

My brother has been calling me to listen to radio interviews, TV promotions and debates as well as sending me e-mails about his choice for this year. I have done some of the same. Last night it got a little heated but we always end up in good terms. I guess there is no easy way to let others understand what the most important issues are on this campaign. There is a lot going on in this country at the moment and I guess it is easy to get lost in the issues.

One thing I have always thought about is the undeniable connection our actions as a nation has to do with the state that it is in. I know a lot of people don’t want to think about God and politics, but he is involved in every aspect of our life. This great nation was founded “One nation under God” and that is why it has been so powerful but as we push God to the side we become weaker. Just look around you, we can deny it all we want and blame it in so many other things but at the end we will know for sure.

Here is an important message, Eleventh Hour Election Alert, I encourage to see it and to open your heart. Then go and vote, it is a privilege not everyone has in this world, don’t waste it.

A Mid-Life Opportunity

21 10 2008

I wonder why we tend to be negative about change and transformations, we call it “crisis” and mistakenly many of us accept it as something that should not be happening at all until it happens to us. Change is inevitable and the resistance we create for ourselves and the pressure we receive from others to remain the same it’s what creates the crisis.

In Mid-Life Transformations I read a very clear explanation or what the process is all about. A lot of us runaway from being labeled to be having a mid-life crisis thinking that this is something that happens only to old people but studies have shown that it could start anywhere from 37-50 years old, and it could be sooner or later within that age range. So to me is no longer about age but about a stage in my life when I’m called to put everything -Body, Mind and Soul- in order to be able to be transformed.

Opportunities come in many shapes and forms but the main ingredient is that it challenges us to make changes in order to seize them. We not only look at our abilities but we also look at what is holding us back from moving forward. Sometimes it is our past experiences that have held us prisoner from our own potential in life and at this point is when we are urged to resolve them. Breaking free is not always easy or painless. we need to embrace the difficulties and the pain, if we don’t we might never go through this process.

Just as the caterpillar goes through different stages until reaching total transformation into a unique and beautiful butterfly, we also go through stages, but for some reason this particular stage is not well accepted or supported in order to help us get the most out of it. I believe that is why mishandling the process destroy so many relationships when if properly viewed it could become the beginning of something better. I have been reading about this topic for years from different points of views; psychologists, therapists, life coaches, etc. but I noticed that there is nothing about this stage in my Catholic spiritual resources, at least I haven’t found it. I need to include the spiritual dimension of this process and I don’t want to get lost in all the changes that are taking place.

Another characteristic of this transformation period is the increasing need to be alone, but not lonely. The reason we want to be alone is because not everyone around us is in the same stage we are and because they don’t understanding it they try to prevent us from going into our great journey. The process of transformation is in motion, we have nothing to do with it, it doesn’t begin at will and therefore the best way to handle it is going towards where it wants to takes us.

One of the most difficult things about this whole process is that we don’t know the final result of this transformation ahead of time. In effect we will be a new creation born of our own individual experiences, desires, dreams, goals and talents. I guess that’s why it is so difficult for society to accept; because there is no set pattern, age group, and outcome. Each person has to forge their own path and overcome their obstacles on their journey to become someone new, mostly without any support. I feel this should change. We can’t continue letting people go through this important stage alone, lost and guilty just because we can’t understand it fully. It is a beautiful and powerful stage, one where we will finally arrive to our own ground, Truthful Ground*, one that will help us live more significantly in this world.

* Truthful Ground is the title of my next book. No publication date has been announced yet.

Shifting Our Collective Consciousness

12 10 2008

Our present economic situation is the inevitable result of our actions. For decades we have learned to spend more than we earn and financial institutions were the enablers to this misfortune. The way all of the financial institutions deal with this economic crisis doesn’t make sense to me. Raising interest rates on credit card balances when we get behind in payments is not going to help us pay them back sooner. Damaging our credit records is not going to help us, if we can get loans at a decent interest rate from whatever source possible -like the equity in our homes- in order to get our finances in order the would be better off. What makes them think that if we can’t pay the minimum due on our accounts that we will be able to pay the full balance? It is not that we don’t want to pay our bills, it is that we can’t pay with money we don’t have. I believe that there should be a shift on our collective consciousness and instead at looking so much at the financial institutions that the government look at us with compassion as well and try to help us.

The situation is clear, even if the financial institutions are saved by the government’s bail out program or by becoming part owners they won’t in turn reach out to us in order to rescue us from our financial ordeals. I don’t believe that will help us in any way, shape or form. What I believe should happen is for all financial institutions to communicate in writing with their customers with new re-payment alternatives on their accounts. Everyone knows that interest rates, penalties, mortgage terms and writing off accounts don’t work. I challenge them to stop being so greedy and adjust each and every account to the point that they can at least break even, if they don’t I’m sure in time we will learn to do without them. Banks should do whatever it takes to keep everyone in their homes instead of going through another foreclosure. Shifting our collective consciousness to one based on what we earn and what we can afford will provide us with peace of mind and well-being.

I don’t know if we have a Domestic Economics course in school, one that teaches not about this country domestic economics but one that teaches about our own economics at home. If we do students should be required to mastered it by the time they graduate from high school. I would suggest this course begins in Junior High. Now days even teenagers have their own credit cards without having a job. As parents it is our job to teach our kids about handling money, even if it is from our own mistakes.

What is your opinion on this whole situation? What do you think needs to happen in order to turn it around?

What to say…

9 10 2008

What do you say when the words escape your mind? when it goes in circles and land nowhere? when they long to come out but don’t even know how? I’ve been feeling that way, with a great need to write but not knowing what to say.

Writing to me is like breathing -just like a friend of mine said- and yet it has been hard to do. Sometimes you have to sit with your emotions for a while before something worthwhile emerges and I believe that’s where I have been lately, percolating the many facets of my mind, heart and soul. Perhaps you have felt the same way and preferred to listen instead of talking, reading instead of writing and meditating instead of preaching.

The more time it passes the more I panic that I won’t find a way out, that my words somehow will lose its strength, that I won’t know how to best express what lies within. I can’t let that happen because without sharing my words I feel like dying inside, my emotions will burst the seams that keeps me whole and then it will be hard to mend the fragments of my being. It is the way I give myself, a way to be and stay sane, to connect with me and those around me and love me and then by consequence love others.

I have fallen in a trap of expectations and perhaps that caused this draining mood. I’m letting go and embracing each moment as it comes but it doesn’t come easy. The more I do it the better it gets and who knows what I will experience then but whatever it is I will embrace it, love it and treasure it because it won’t be forced or expected but given freely as a gift.

The Invitation

1 10 2008

I’ve been drawn to read a lot of memoirs lately, and a whole selection of them are being published as we speak. I’m not the only one who is enjoying page after page these books; I guess it is our hunger to know what others do in situations similar to ours or the desire to imagine what we would do if we had the chance to live our own desires and make our dreams a reality.

These are the books I have been reading in this genre:
Eat, Pray, Love
The Invitation
and today I bought The Sharper the Knife, The Less You Cry

I would like to share with you the poem on The Invitation that is the base for this book, I think you’ll love it. Tell me what you think. 🙂

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dreams
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon…
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.

If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.
